This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years.
The incumbent of this position will support a Research Geneticist conducting research on the improvement of industrial/oil crops and use emerging phenotyping and genotyping technologies such as high throughput phenotyping and genotyping techniques.
Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Assisting in field work including all aspects of crop production and management practices from planting to harvesting.
Keeping detailed records of experimental data.
Operating and maintaining specialized farming and harvesting equipment and automated systems.
Collecting, processing, and analyzing agricultural data utilizing computer programs and software.
Adopting and using emerging phenotyping technologies including drones and ground-based vehicles.
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Subject to satisfactory completion of a one year trial period.

Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to plants; assisting with operating specialized farming and harvesting equipment; recording data into spreadsheets; and analyzing data using different statistical methods and computer programs.

Education: Successful completion of a four-year course of study leading to a Bachelors degree with at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. Related courses include Biology, Microbiology, Agronomy, Plant Science, Plant Physiology, Chemistry, Botany, Environmental Science, Physics, or Biotechnology.

Qualifying experience for the GS-06 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience with collecting and evaluating samples from plants; operating specialized farming and harvesting equipment; recording data into spreadsheets; analyzing data using different statistical methods and computer programs; and assisting with writing results into reports and manuscripts.

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Microbiology, Agronomy, Plant Science, Plant Physiology, Chemistry, Botany, Environmental Science, Physics, or Biotechnology.
