This position will support a Research Geneticist conducting research focused on the breeding and genetics of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) for abiotic stress tolerance, including high ambient temperature and drought. This research integrates field evaluation of abiotic stress and disease response, genotypic analysis, and high-throughput phenotyping directed towards bean improvement. The agronomic evaluation of breeding lines and populations in the field and greenhouse in Puerto Rico, and through broad collaborations in the US and internationally, plays a key role in facilitating the pyramiding of these traits. In addition to common bean, research is being conducted on tepary bean (P. acutifolius), an abiotic stress tolerant sister species of bean, to improve its disease resistance, seed quality, and agronomic traits.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Planting, fertilization, irrigation, harvesting, treatment applications, soil and tissue sampling, and pesticide and herbicide preparation and spraying.

Collecting a variety of data, including but not limited to: seed color and seed type, plant stand, vigor, plant height, phenology, disease scores, insect scores, plant growth measurements and other plant descriptors.

Operating and maintaining field equipment such as balances, sprayers, light tractors, planters, cultivators, threshers, seed cleaners, all-terrain vehicles, trucks, and irrigation pumps or equipment.
