As a Public Affairs Specialist, you will:
Serve as PHMSA’s lead spokesman with the media, interacting with the news media and national organizations interested in PHMSA’s programs to explain and defend the programs, functions and performance in these varied areas against undue criticism.
Establish and maintain working relationships with representatives of the media, trade press, agency Departmental employees, national organizations and other internal and external groups affected by PHMSA programs.
Develop and implement a strategic communication planning and implementation of comprehensive communications efforts, both locally and national in scope, to inform and educate the public and specific constituencies about the mission and area agencies programs, activities and services.
Plan, lead and execute national communication initiatives to convey complex information regarding mission area programs, research on program-related areas, pipeline and hazardous materials incident responsibilities and activities.
Review PHMSA rulemakings, programs, projects, events, and other activities to plan and prepare communication plans and collateral in alignment with PHMSA and Departmental goals and strategies.
Advise top level officials of PHMSA and the program offices on problems involved in communicating information to affected public. Analyze programs and develop recommendations for anticipating and addressing potentially negative news stories and identifying and marketing positive new stories.
