Major Duties may include, but are not limited to::
Collecting, preparing, evaluating, and verifying samples and supporting records; maintaining records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources
Maintaining inventory of chemicals, preparing solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposing of waste material (both chemical and biological).
Assisting in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to the assigned area of work.
Keeping detailed records of experimental data.
Performing routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
Maintaining, calibrating and modifying equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
Tabulating, stiatistically analyzing and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Subject to satisfactory completion of a one year probationary period.

At the GS-05: Qualifying experience for the GS-05 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in the conduct of nutrition research studies by collecting and preparing food-related, bacterial, fat, fecal, cellular, etc. samples and data; and experience compiling and maintaining research results and data using automated systems.

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related. Related courses include (biology, food science, exercise science, genetics, microbiology, etc.)

A combination of education and experience as described above.
At the GS-06: Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting and measuring biological samples in a laboratory environment in support of genetics and nutrition research study; preparing samples for research purposes using laboratory equipment; maintaining and interpreting research results and data using automated systems; and assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment.

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include nutrition, physiology, molecular biology, genetics, or related.

A combination of education and experience as described above.
