Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
In consultation and coordination with the Research Leader and scientists, contributes to the strategic direction of the program.
Plans, conducts, and reports research on genetic diversity, plant biology, agronomy, nutritional quality, and seed quality of global rice accessions and collaborates with other scientists in carrying out the mission of the research center.
Modifies existing protocols and develops new methods to solve curatorial problems.
Directs the implementation of efficient germplasm tracking systems and use of phenotypic, genotypic, and informational databases that support passport, characterization, evaluation, and other scientific data of the rice collection.
Responds to customer requests for information and germplasm material and oversees the selection and shipment of requested plant material in accordance with appropriate state, federal, and international laws.
Searches scientific literature and participates in scientific meetings, workshops, and conferences to implement the latest principles of plant genetic resource management.
Works with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) technology transfer coordinators, line management and Office of National Programs to manage and track material transfer agreements associated with domestic and international seed stocks.
Collaborates with the Rice Crop Germplasm Committee to formulate, establish, and implement policies and procedures for the conservation and accurate characterization of rice germplasm at a national level.
Operates location vehicles in order to engage in field and greenhouse activities and attend meetings and conferences.

Basic Requirements:
Geneticist Series (0440): Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.
Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least 1 full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are:
Experience in wide range of concepts, principles, practices and methodology of genetics as it relates to plant genetic resource management, production and preservation of high quality seed or clonal propagules.
Performed plant propagation techniques and genomic analyses for the comparison of diverse germplasm using genetic markers and other suitable genomic techniques.
Provided advisory or specialized services in order to facilitate interaction with scientists, staff, administrators, user/consumer groups, and the public.
Established or developed documentation and data management in support of genetic resource collection development and research.
Experience using genetic resource information and retrieving plant descriptor data using software and database systems such as GRIN-Global
Evaluated genetic diversity plant descriptor and genomic data.
GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least 1 full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Managing of genetic resource information management software and data base systems, such as GRIN-Global, for storing and retrieving plant descriptor data
Served as a recognized authority in characterization of diversity of using plant descriptor and genomic data.
