The Graphics Designer will provide graphics and multimedia support services on a variety of projects geared towards Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, their staff, and external audiences. The incumbent will work closely with the Communications Director and Communications Manager to provide graphic design services and execute multimedia components of communication plans for specific services, products, and initiatives. Projects and responsibilities may include the development of multimedia components for awareness campaigns; design of visual communication products including elements for the web, print, newsletters and reports; developing, writing, and distributing weekly and monthly newsletters; and providing multimedia support for the CAO’s social media accounts.
The successful candidate will collaborate with numerous internal and external stakeholders, assemble requirements, and work creatively to drive to results. S/he must be able to utilize their excellent design skills to create engaging graphic content to complement marketing and communications campaigns for targeted audiences.
Primary Duties/Responsibilies:
1) Design and create graphic design and multimedia components in support of communications, including marketing materials to House Members and staff, the CAO’s Semiannual Report, and other materials to increase awareness of CAO policies, procedures, and services.
2) Take a lead role on graphic design projects and collaborate with Communications & Marketing staff and other CAO staff to design supporting materials for marketing and branding efforts.
3) Create and develop innovative multimedia content which incorporate visual designs that are both user-friendly and engaging.
4) Provide consultative multimedia services to internal departments regarding communication projects, interpret design needs into graphic design ideas and information, and provide recommendations in the graphic design process.
5) Initiate and direct meetings to better define customer goals, suggest enhancements to initial customer requests to create efficiencies, and maximize impact and budget.
6) Manage multiple simultaneous projects, revisions, and timelines.
7) Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current graphics software, techniques, and industry standards.
8) Take photographs, shoot/edit video, create animations, and design graphic elements for websites and other media, such as digital monitors and posters.
9) Develop multimedia content for the CAO’s social media accounts. Develop social media campaigns and track monthly analytics.
10) Assist in the management of legislative branch partner relations by facilitating communications, negotiating, and coordinating campaigns.
11) Establishes and maintains policies and procedures, and update as necessary.
12) Participates in special projects and performs other official duties as assigned.
Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactorily completing a criminal history records check (or other applicable security clearance) and a pre-employment drug-test (pre-identified position only).
1) Minimum 4+ years of experience in a graphic design and/or marketing/communications role on Capitol Hill, with an internet company, advertising agency or within a marketing communications department.
2) Good understanding of design elements and principles, such as hierarchy and balance, as well as typography and color theory.
3) Proven ability to develop and implement effective marketing and advertising multimedia.
4) Ability to independently create clear and concise content a broad range of technical and non-technical topics to a variety of audiences.
5) Must have solid understanding of current web trends and business practices, including social media strategy. Experience with interactive marketing campaign management and tracking.
6) Outstanding communications skills, both verbal & written; must have demonstrated proficiency in creating engaging multimedia communications.
7) Strong project management, customer relations, and time management skills with the ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
8) Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop and InDesign. Experience with Drupal or another content management system is helpful.
BS/BA degree in Graphics Design, Business, Communications, Advertising, Marketing; or equivalent combination of education & experience.
