Work occasionally requires immersion in swift cold water for long periods of time.
Duties
As a Biological Science Technician, you will be responsible for assisting one or more professional biologists in completing all phases of a fishery biological study or project of significant scope and duration to include project planning, logistical arrangements, field work, correlation and analysis of data, and completion of reports and/or other documents related to the project.
- Conducting field investigations for habitat analysis and species and habitat restoration using both active and passive collection methods, depending on the objectives, environmental characteristics, aquatic organism's behavior, and size. Survey projects may include: census surveys; distribution and abundance estimation; mark/recapture studies; fish and habitat assessments, and acoustic tagging.
- Active collection methods used to conduct stream and fish surveys (aquatic habitat and aquatic organism census) includes use of electrofishing equipment, seine and nets, trawls, and dredges. This may also require snorkeling for direct observation.
- Passive collection methods used for biological sampling of aquatic organisms includes gill nets, hoop nets, fyke nets, and rotary screw traps.
- Collecting, storing, organizing, and transferring raw data sheets to digital files and inputing data into computer databases. Entering field data into a central database.
- Utilizing a variety of technical equipment such as GPS units, electrofishers and microscopes, tag detection equipment, data loggers, and electronic data collectors, water quality sampling and survey equipment to conduct field surveys; PIT tag/micro-acoustic/radio-telemetry equipment to track fish to achieve study objectives.

A. I have one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) conducting surveys of fish/aquatic species and their habitat; 2) performing fish sampling operations using standard biological techniques; 3) accurately collecting and recording data collected during surveys.
B. I qualify for this position at the GS-05 level because I have completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of courses must be directly related to fishery subjects, such as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, aquaculture, etc.
C. I have a combination of specialized experience (as described in A above) and education (as described in B above, INCLUDING THE UNIT REQUIREMENTS) that, when prorated, combine to meet the qualification requirements for this position. Experience and education are each computed as percentages of their respective requirements and must equal at least 100% when combined. Only education beyond the second year is creditable to meet this standard.
