Major Duties:
The Chief of the Editorial Office must be a skilled and experienced copy-editor with a command of the rules of grammar and style; the ability to edit complex manuscripts in law and social sciences, sometimes under deadline pressure; knowledge and experience in typography, graphic design, and page layout of books, reports, articles, pamphlets, brochures, curriculum materials, and other print and online publications; proficiency with industry standard desktop publishing applications and the ability to train others; knowledge and experience with printing and binding processes and specifications; excellent at communicating with others, including Center senior staff, authors both inside and outside the Center, including judges, law and social science professors and other subject matter experts, other employees, and vendors; the ability to assign and manage the work of editorial staff, including establishing and modifying priorities and setting and meeting deadlines; and the ability to manage the Center's budget for printing and related supplies and equipment, and for contract editorial services.
Under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of the Center, specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in the humanities, communications, graphic design, or a related field.
Federal government benefits are applicable. An array of supplemental benefits are also offered including a transportation subsidy and a flexible benefit program allowing for pre-tax deductions for health insurance, health care, dependent care, and commuter expenses. The FJC is located in the Thurgood Marshall Building, conveniently situated to public transportation directly beside Union Station. The Marshall Building houses a child development center and a health fitness facility for its tenants.
The Center provides telework options subject to supervisory and division director approval. However, the position is located in Washington, D.C.
This position does not carry the tenure rights of positions in the competitive civil service.
The starting salary is set at $121,262. This position falls in the Center's pay band VI, which has a salary range up to $191,360; not all incumbents in pay band VI positions can expect to reach the top of the range. For the successful candidate who is not currently a member of the Center staff, a higher starting salary, but not to exceed $127,325, may be considered based upon the successful candidate's current salary. For the successful internal candidate earning less than the starting range minimum, his/her salary will be brought up to the range minimum of $121,262. If the successful internal candidate's salary falls above the range minimum that salary will be matched up to his/her current salary.
