Physical Demands:Field work is physically demanding. The Forester must be capable of extended periods of walking and working in rough mountainous terrain, extremely dense brush, logging slash, and ground that is either wet or covered in snow. The incumbent must possess strength, stamina, and agility to successfully complete field work. Indoor office work necessitates long hours of sitting, intense concentration, telephone conversations, operating computer terminals, and attending meetings and trainings. Work requires the ability to effectively cope with pressure associated by both fixed and irregular deadlines, and managing multiple priorities.
Work Environment:Work is routinely performed in a heated/cooled indoor office setting and outdoors that may include extremely hot/cold/windy/dry/wet/snowy weather in rugged terrain, remote sites, poison oak, bees and hornets, snakes, logging and construction sites and occasionally at public meetings. This position requires average operation of motor vehicles on narrow mountainous roads. Protective gear is necessary for field work. A valid state driver's license is required.

For GS-05: This is a basic trainee position. The employee works under the guidance and supervision of a supervisor or higher graded forester. This is a developmental position. The incumbent will perform the duties at a reduced level of responsibility and/or difficulty while receiving on-the-job and other appropriate training. The incumbent in this position would be taught basic forest management tasks that are performed under very close supervision. The trainee forester performs basic tasks associated with logging systems, sale planning and layout, road layout. The trainee forester will learn basic tasks in timber sale planning, logging systems, reforestation, timber stand improvement, tree improvement, landscape forestry/ecology, and trespass.
For GS-07: This is an advanced trainee position. The employee works under the guidance and supervision of a supervisor or higher graded forester. This is a developmental position. The incumbent performs the duties at a reduced level of responsibility and/or difficulty as described below while receiving on-the-job and other appropriate training. The incumbent in this position works with increasing independence in the completion of assignments based upon gained experience and training. More difficult assignments are provided as the incumbent progresses. The trainee forester will learn advanced tasks in timber sale planning, environmental assessment preparation, logging systems, contract preparation, timber sale contract administration, reforestation, timber stand improvement, tree improvement, landscape forestry/ ecology, communication and trespass.
For GS-09: This position serves as a Forester. These functions include the following: Work involving forest landscapes, forest and woodland sale planning, forest product sales and administration, reforestation, and forest stand improvements. The incumbent plans and implements technical projects and performs leadership duties in support of forestry-oriented, multiple-use land management programs, including coordination of appropriate staff to accomplish the work. The incumbent reports to the District Manager, Field Manager, or other supervisory official.
Basic Requirement: This position has a basic education requirement which requires that applicants have a degree in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry.
The curriculum must have included courses in each of the following areas: (1) Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Examples of creditable courses in this area include silviculture, forest management operations, timber management, wildland fire science or fire management, utilization of forest resources, forest regulation, recreational land management, watershed management, and wildlife or range habitat management; (2) Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Examples of creditable courses in this area include dendrology, forest ecology, silvics, forest genetics, wood structure and properties, forest soils, forest entomology, and forest pathology; and (3) Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. Examples of creditable courses include forest biometrics, forest mensuration, forest valuation, statistical analysis of forest resource data, renewable natural resources inventories and analysis, and photogrammetry or remote sensing.

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
