This position is in NASA's Pathways Intern Program which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. This position is for an engineering student trainee in the Structural Dynamics Branch located in the Materials and Structures Division of the Research and Engineering Directorate at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC). You would contribute to the Structural Dynamics Branch's mission to be a Leader in providing innovative Loads and Dynamics solutions for challenging aerospace flight research and engineering missions focused on materials and structures for extreme environments, power, propulsion, and communications.

You will be supporting work areas providing; dynamic modeling (Finite Element Analysis -- FEA); modal analysis, test and model correlation; vibration analysis and testing of spaceflight systems and components; vibro-acoustic modeling (Statistical Energy Analysis -- SEA and Finite Element Acoustics), analysis and testing; shock analysis; ballistic impact modeling, analysis and testing (Digital Image Correlation -- DIC); dynamic environments development; development of mitigation strategies for vibration, vibro-acoustics, shock, and impact environments; application and validation of modeling tools to predict response of structures to ballistic impacts; development of structural concepts and technologies to reduce weight and/or create energy-absorbing devices for aerospace systems including launch vehicles, human and robotic spacecraft, turbine engines and other propulsion subsystems and components. Current projects supported include, but are not limited to, Orion, Space Launch System, Advanced Composites, and Revolutionary Vertical Lift.
You are required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
You must have at least one calendar year remaining prior to completing your degree requirements by the start date of your appointment.
This appointment will start no earlier than July 2018. Applicants who indicate a graduation date prior to July 2019 will be found ineligible. The expected completion date you enter in the NASA Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to make this determination.
You will be required to undergo a pre-employment background investigation.
Interns may work schedules not to exceed 1,040 hours per year (part-time or full-time on an intermittent basis). The supervisor and intern will agree on a formally-arranged schedule of school and work rotations. A rotation is a defined period of work or school study, usually a semester, a summer, or a quarter in length.

Pathways candidates must be pursuing or planning to pursue a standard professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree or higher with a major of study in engineering, physical science, or mathematics. The following majors are preferred but not required: Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Acoustics Engineering*, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering**.
Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for this position. Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. **Majors in Civil Engineering are qualifying for conversion if the curriculum includes or is supplemented by twelve (12) semester hours (or the equivalent) in strength of materials, structures, thermodynamics, and/or basic static and dynamics.
*Majors in Acoustics Engineering are also qualifying for conversion with other supplemented course work.
