The Park Ranger will perform a variety of interpretive, educational and visitor services functions for the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Tasks will include developing and conducting formal tours, education programs and presentations interpreting the parks natural and cultural resources, and resource issues; conducting informal presentations, safety patrols, conveying park rules and regulations to park visitors; assisting with visitor center and campground operations, special events, publicity, signage, maintenance of displays/exhibits, collection and documentation of visitor program statistics. Other tasks include administrative functions, light trail work, gardening and working with volunteers. Knowledge of open water canoe and kayaking skills, be able to kayak 5-8 miles daily, capable of towing visitors in a kayak.
The Park Ranger may be exposed to extreme weather (heat/cold), insects, poison ivy, and work will involve long periods of kayaking, walking and standing, heavy lifting and physical exertion. Employee will be expected to operate a motor vehicle, work independently, work weekends, holidays and some evenings.
Area Description: The National Parks of New York Harbor include 10 national park system sites with 23 unique destinations in and around four of the five boroughs of New York City and northern New Jersey, including Gateway National Recreation Area (NRA). Gateway NRA was established in 1972 as America's first urban National Park. Located in the New York Metropolitan Area, the park extends from Brooklyn and Queens to Staten Island and Sandy Hook, NJ.
The Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area includes all of the Gateway sites that are located in Brooklyn and Queens. Encompassing approximately 20 square miles, it comprises some of the parks most significant resources. Jamaica Bay Unit sites at which the seasonal park ranger may work are varied and may include the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which comprises most of the Jamaica Bay ecosytems, and internationally known urban natural area, refuge and bird sanctuary; Floyd Bennett Field, the site of the New York City's historic first airport, youth group overnight camping and sailing programs, Riis Park, a culturally important, and historic public bathing beach. Canarsie Pier, a historic ferry landing, and now a favorite dishing pier for local residents; and Rockaway's Fort Tilden maritime ecology and the evolution of coastal defense.
