AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located 27 miles from the city of Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. The park, at an elevation of 4400 feet, has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild winters, abundant sunshine, low humidity, and approximately 10 inches of rainfall per year. Carlsbad (population 30,000) has all amenities and services including medical and dental facilities, motels, banks, restaurants, churches, grocery stores, department stores, and several recreation facilities. Schools K-12, are available and also the New Mexico State University-Carlsbad branch. Other services can be found in Albuquerque (275 mi les), El Paso, Texas ( 170 miles), Lubbock , Texas (180 miles) or Midland/Odessa, Texas (140 miles). Please note: A government van pool provides service between Carlsbad, NM and Carlsbad Caverns National Park for staff on
the core shift. Riders pay a per ride rate of $1.50 each way. Staff are responsible for their own commuter transportation for shifts that extend beyond the core shift. Government housing is not available.

Directs an intricate program of resources management activities that involve sensitive and complex issues that may impact a wide variety of park issues. Prepares and coordinates the efforts of others in the preparation of resources management plans and specific action plans pertaining to the management and protection of cultural and natural resources. Promotes a culture of on-the-job safety practices, such as situational awareness, training, and proper equipment use. Discuss work progress, recognize excellent work, and address problem areas with subordinates in a timely and constructive way. Develop employees' careers through training, coaching, mentoring, or other means. Represents the superintendent when working with others on resource stewardship issues. Attends management and professional conferences and other events for the purposes of exchanging information and advocacy for park stewardship. Negotiates cooperative and interagency agreements and other cooperative instruments needed to effectively carry out resources stewardship goals. Collects, analyzes, and synthesizes scientific information from research; monitors resources management actions and other sources of information; and prepares reports for specific projects. Incorporates appropriate Geographic Information System (GIS) technology into job to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquiries from managers and others.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily indoors. Occasionally, work may be performed outdoors in all types of weather and conditions. Outdoor assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, caves, fire lines, and deserts. On occasion, flying in a fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
