Internship opportunities are available within the Center for Financial Research Branch (CFR) and Regional Operations Branch. The CFR is engaged in research on topics important to the FDIC mission of deposit insurance, bank supervision, and resolution of failed financial institutions. The CFR research programs follow banking industry developments, risk measurement and management methods, regulatory policy and related topics.
The incumbant will physcially work in Washington, DC. Candidate(s) selected for this position must live or attend school in the local commuting area.
The applicants selected will be offered an excepted appointment not-to-exceed. After successful completion of the program requirements and based on FDIC's needs, the selectees may be non-competitively converted to a Term or Permanent position based upon an evaluation of performance, completion of at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program, and a skills assessment. However, service in the FDIC Internship Program confers no right to further employment in the competitive or excepted service.

Below is a summary of the work done in the sections within the CFR that are currently seeking interns:
The Banking Research Section is primarily responsible for academic research, short studies, policy analyses, and model development that support the FDIC's mission. Economists write academic research papers, organize research conferences, serve as discussants and chairs at conferences, and referee academic journal articles on banking economics. Staff writes internal reports on topics such as optimal bank resolution, deposit insurance pricing, bank capital regulation, and securitizations.
The Quantitative Risk Analysis Section focuses on the development of internal modeling, the evaluation of quantitative models used in the industry, and producing original economic and financial research. The economists and analysts on the team participate or lead internal modeling projects forecasting bank risk, bank resolution costs, and stress test models. Financial economists interact directly with the industry by conducting regulatory reviews of quantitative models used for estimating bank risks, including credit, market, and interest risks, as well as stress testing models. The Section also engages with the academic community be producing original research for publication in academic journals and presenting and discussing at major academic conferences.
The Regional Operations Branch identifies, analyzes, monitors, and communicates emerging risks, with a focus on local economies and banks. Economists and financial communicate analytical results to policymakers, senior management, and other stakeholders.
Low Risk Position - National Agency Check Investigation (NACI) required.

All selectees must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
To be eligible for conversion to the competitive service, you must complete 640 hours of work experience (up to 320 hours may be waived based on successful performance in the position and a 3.45 overall GPA); meet the OPM qualification standards for the target position; and meet the requirements of the FDIC Pathways Agreement.
