The Presidio Trust is seeking a Chief Communications Officer to lead our communications and government relations team to support our goals of connecting people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities with this magnificent place, being a model of environmental stewardship, and ensuring operational excellence in a unique governmental agency.
The Presidio is a unique place. The Presidio is part of the largest urban national park in the United States, situated in one of the densest and most diverse and innovative cities in the country. The Presidio is part of an international biosphere reserve, is where San Francisco began in 1776, is a National Historic Landmark District, and is a former military post transformed into a park.
The Presidio offers the magnificent beauty and historic sites that one expects from a national park, plus art, culture, and recreational resources not traditionally found in such a setting. It is also unusual in that, having rehabilitated many of the buildings created by the military, the Presidio is now home to 3,000 residents and 200+ organizations and non-profit organizations.
The Presidio Trust is a unique federal agency. In our founding legislation, the Presidio Trust was charged with operating the park without taxpayer support. We earn funds through leasing homes and workspaces and operating hotels, a golf course, and venues; those funds are then used to operate and maintain the park and our programs.
The Trusts Communications Team develops, implements, evaluates, and continuously improves the communications for this complex place. The Trust is fortunate to work in close partnership with the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. The Chief Communications Officer will coordinate work with these agencies on a nearly daily basis.
Our ideal candidate is a communications professional with experience in communicating to diverse audiences, an effective manager of talented, mission-driven staff, an experienced executive, a talented public and government relations ambassador, and a person with LEAN, Agile or similar training. If you are excited about being a champion of the Presidio and leading innovative and talented communications professionals, we want to see your application!

Collaborate with the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy: The CCO will bring finely-honed collaborative skills to a range of important and often complex partnerships. Most importantly, the Trust relies on and is relied upon by the National Park Service (NPS) and the Conservancy. This key collaboration uses a collective impact model in our shared goal of making the Presidio a place that everyone visits, loves, and takes pride in. The CCO will personally establish and maintain productive professional relationships and collegiality with NPS and Presidio Trust staff leaders, and lead the Communications team members to do the same. In addition, the CCO will scan the horizon for areas of joint risks and opportunities and will proactively communicate and work with the NPS and Conservancy.
Lead and Manage Communications Team: The CCO will lead a staff of approximately seven employees and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the divisions activities and performance. This will be accomplished by adopting Presidio Trust executive and management standards and practices designed to unleash the creativity of staff members through coaching and supporting them in daily problem solving and continuous improvements. The CCO will provide and receive consistent, objective supportive feedback and make management decisions that support the teams and the Trusts success.
