Summary

These positions are temporary and have a Not-to-Exceed date. However, an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.

These positions are located on a Forest Service unit and performs duties in support of the wildlife management program.

These positions are located on the Pacific Southwest Research Station in multiple duty locations and have multiple work schedules. Duty locations and work schedules are as follows:

Alta, CA (3 positions, full-time)
Davis, CA (3 positions, part-time)
Marysville, CA (3 positions, part-time)
Placerville, CA (3 positions, full-time)
Sacramento, CA (6 positions, 3 full-time, 3 part-time).

TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours.

Positions will be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

Duties

Help

Independently, or as part of a team, participates in procedural wildlife-related assignments where methods and techniques are well established. Makes browse surveys; takes and records measurements such as counting stems, identifying species, measuring leaders, etc.; identifies and measures species and conditions; delineates wildlife habitat types on topographic maps; and, identifies habitat condition.

Maintains records of investigations and trail data as requested by team leader or supervisor. The supervisor or team leader makes sure assigned are completed; and information is developed; that the methods used in securing and verifying data are acceptable; and that use of guidelines are technically-accurate and in accordance with agency guidelines.

Under supervision, prepares data summaries in proper format. Summarizes data obtained from field collections using prescribed statistical procedures. Assists in the attainment of field data by calculating and recording relevant biological information irregular to the specific assignment. Formulates and orders data as directed and prepares data for computer use. Assists in the collection, handling, and preservation of specimens.

May occasionally serve as a crew leader on designated projects.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-04: (6) Six months of general experience and (6) six months of specialized experience.

General Experience is defined as: Farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; work in a greenhouse, nursery or landscape business tending plants and performing general labor tasks; or worked as an animal caretaker in a laboratory, zoo or pet store; or other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position.

Specialized Experience is defined as: Recording data during survey or sampling procedures performed in support of wildlife biology activities; assisting technical or professional personnel by performing field techniques including taking measurements and collecting samples; and using basic field equipment such as data recorders and geographic positioning systems to gather wildlife survey data. –OR

Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours or the equivalent in a combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. -OR

A combination of education and experience.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire. Applicants with veterans' preference are listed ahead of applicants who do not have veterans' preference within each category.
