The Pathways Internship Program targets students accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled in a qualifying educational program in an accredited institution, on a full or half-time basis with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school. Internship appointments under the Internship Experience Program (IEP) are non-temporary and can last the duration of the student’s academic program. This will be determined at the time of selection. This position is within the Innovation Directorate located within the Office of Management's Policy, Rightsizing, and Innovation (M/PRI). M/PRI is the Department of State’s central coordinator of management reporting directly to the Under Secretary for Management. The incumbent reports to the lead on energy, environment and sustainability, located within the Innovation Directorate. The incumbent will work within the Greening Diplomacy Initiative.
PILLARS OF THE GREENING DIPLOMACY INITIATIVE PORTFOLIO
• Regulations, Planning & Reporting: GDI oversees and coordinates the Department’s efforts to comply with and respond to all executive orders, regulations and reporting inquiries related to the Department’s energy, environmental and sustainability performance. GDI regularly reviews Department operations and works with various bureaus and offices to ensure Department personnel is informed of and is adhering to all energy, environment and sustainability requirements. GDI represents the Department in related White House, Congressional and interagency working groups where energy and environmental related requirements for federal agencies are developed and carrying out.
• Compliance & Innovation: Occasionally, there are new regulations that require a change in Department procedures or operations. GDI works with affected offices to develop solutions and uses the position of M/PRI to convene potential partners to help initiate changes that result in Department compliance. Outside of helping to meet mandates, GDI also identifies operational practices that could benefit from innovation and enhancements. Similar to compliance efforts, GDI works with relevant stakeholders to develop new processes and tools, build support, and then deploy while assisting in change management.
• Outreach & Communications: GDI serves as the caretaker of the Department’s best practices, sustainability-related institutional knowledge, success stories, and compliance requirements. Leveraging this wealth of information, GDI engages stakeholders by creating and maintaining, tools, social media platforms, and a consortium of partners in order to advance GDI’s and the Department’s mission at-large. With internal and external communications strategies, GDI endeavors to imbue within the Department’s culture support for sustainability and environmentalism and to gain external backing and resources for the Department’s mission.
The intern's duties include but are not limited to receiving technical inquiries and determining the correct person to route them to for response, assisting specialists on standardized procurement requests, reviewing and assembling information in accordance with guidance, and entering data into automated systems.

The cost of premiums is split between the employee and the agency, as it is for all permanent employees.
As a Department of State employee, Interns are eligible to receive a transit subsidy each month to compensate for travel to and from work via certain types of public transportation.
