Become part of the team that brings new technologies from NIST laboratories to the marketplace. This position will provide experience in working throughout the patent prosecution process working with our Patent Paralegal and Patent Attorney. Specific tasks include: docketing, use of IP Manager software, filing, docket review, file management, and support for the full life cycle of the patenting process from initial idea, working with the patent attorney to prepare and file both provisional and non-provisional patent applications, tracking the docket through issuance at the Patent and Trademark Office, and review and payment of patent maintenance fees.
All applicants must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, degree) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled). In addition, you must be enrolled in school for the duration of the appointment. You will be required to provide documentation to support your eligibility for the program.
Applicants must possess a grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.

This position has an education requirement. You must submit a copy of your unofficial transcripts to document that you have met the education requirement. You must submit proof of enrollment (i.e., letter from the registrar's office or acceptance letter from an accredited educational institution) for the upcoming semester. If you are not currently enrolled in school then this documentation must confirm the following: the degree/diploma program in which you have been accepted and that you will be enrolled on at least a half-time basis for the upcoming semester.
Special Instructions for Foreign Education: Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree. A listing of these accredited organizations can be found on the Department of Education's website - http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-visitus-forrecog.html. You must provide a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency evaluation with a course by course listing along with your application. Failure to provide such documentation when requested will result in lost consideration.
As a part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed.
PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION: Program participants may be non-competitively converted to a career-conditional, career, or term position within 120 days of successful completion of the program, but there is no requirement to do so.
