Participates in basic archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts. Records data and prepares survey records (e.g., site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, field notes, etc.). Conducts limited supervised excavation and testing of sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials. Duties include completing standard feature and level forms, screening soils to recover artifacts and performing flotation of soil samples. Processes specimens recovered in the field. Prepares specimens to be sent to dating laboratories. Identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation. Maintains field equipment and supplies.
Maintains related databases, forms, maps, and files. Performs data entry related to archeological artifact and project data (e.g., artifact information, catalog records, field notes, site records, etc.) into automated systems, appropriate forms, and archival records. Retrieves and compiles data as required for resource management reports, interpretive exhibits, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking and bending. Heavy items (50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Work is in an office setting and in the field. Survey and excavation work is typically in isolated areas. Operates vehicles on rough roads. Periods of camping under primitive conditions are routine.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Valles Caldera National Preserve became a unit of the NPS on October 1, 2015. The area is mountainous and mostly undeveloped. Elevations range from 7,800' to 11,250'. Temperatures during the summer can range from near freezing (night) to the mid-80 degrees (F) (day), while winter temperatures can reach -30 degrees F. The weather is typically dry but monsoon rains are likely each day during summer. Primary access is by dirt roads, which require the use of 4WD trucks, UTVs or snowmobiles. Secondary access is by hiking (summer) or skiing/snowshoeing (winter), which can be challenging considering the weather and elevation.
Government housing may be available. Housing in the Jemez Springs area is quite limited but both apartments and houses can be found for sale or for rent in Los Alamos or in the Bernalillo/Rio Rancho area. A medical clinic is available nearby in Jemez Pueblo and other medical services are available in Los Alamos and the Bernalillo/Rio Rancho area. Requirements
1. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
2. Applicants must possess a valid state drivers license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid state drivers license is required. A driving record will be required.
