Duties

Help
  • Direct nursing personnel and staff in the performance of nursing care and services in conformity with hospital and nursing policies.
  • Identify training and growth needs of employees and provides or facilitates continuing education and training.
  • Evaluate subordinate supervisors and serve as reviewing official on evaluations of non-supervisory employees rated by subordinate supervisors.
  • Serve as a senior level nurse staff officer for the Department of Medicine.
  • Collect, analyze and advise the Chief Nursing Officer and the Department of Medicine on data related to nursing care hours and workload management, statistical trends in workload, and reliability of documented workload/care provided.
  • Instructs staff on current hospital policy and accepted standards of patient care.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Child Care Background Check Required: National agency check with written inquiries (NACI) and state and criminal history repository (SCHR) checks will be required as a condition of employment.
  • To obtain and maintain licensure in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Tentatively selected applicants will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • As a position covered by the Health Affairs Policy 97006, 23 Oct 1996, requiring Hepatitis B Immunization unless exempted by a physician.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • May be subject to work evenings/nights/weekends/holidays
  • Obtain and maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Nurse Recognition Program (NRP) within six-months of employment as required by assigned department.
  • Employee will be required to wear and use personal protective equipment as required and provided by the employer.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Nurse:

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

  • Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
  • Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes providing personnel management within a healthcare environment, developing and implementing policies or procedures and providing oversight of projects and clinical /patient care operations. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
