This position is located in the Maintenance Division, at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It has been established to provide the park with overall maintenance of Approximately 15 miles of paved and unpaved roads and over 60 parking lots both paved and unpaved within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park . The employee works under the direct supervision of the Engineering Equipment Operator Supervisor. The employee is guided by memoranda, National Park Service standards, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), OSHA, EPA and State of Ohio codes. As an operator for the road work group this individual is responsible for coordinating and completing work assignments utilizing a variety of equipment.
The incumbent will operate graders, bulldozers, backhoes and other heavy engineering equipment and heavy trucks in all weather conditions; in confined areas close to buildings; on narrow gravel roads and uneven terrain adjacent to exposed drop-offs and obstructions in the performance of roads maintenance and project work. Primary work includes, but is not limited to: road grading, laying down and compacting surfacing material, road sub grade excavation and repair, culvert installation to grade, installation of septic systems, and earthwork in archeological sensitive sites. Perform preventative maintenance and repair on heavy trucks and equipment. Also may assist railroad workers, operate flanged wheeled equipment to complete ditching and excavating along the railway. Maintain, modify and repair heavy equipment. Incumbent may also perform hiking trail and grounds maintenance.
Some positions will involve maintenance way of work on the Cuyahoga Valley National Railroad which includes equipment operations, mowing along the railroad, clearing line of sights, tree trimming and removal. Incumbent doing maintenance way of work is subject to mandatory pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and random drug and alcohol testing per the regulations established by the Federal Railroad Authority.
Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
