The Infusion Clinic Specialty Nurse (ICN) is responsible and accountable for developing and implementing comprehensive patient care for the adult/geriatric hematology, oncology and medical patient population assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating activities and programs. These programs at the unit and service level improve the delivery of patient care and staff performance.

The ICN demonstrates a broad perspective of clinical practice and its relationship to unit, service, and hospital goals and objectives. The ICN independently uses sound judgment in making decisions regarding responsibilities and provides leadership to interdisciplinary groups at all levels.
Leadership in decision-making at the service level is expected. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as the ICN requires minimal guidance except in unusual situations. Competency is demonstrated in performing clinical and management skills commensurate with assignment as documented on the ICN. The Infusion clinic RN is responsible for administering chemotherapy and nonchemotherapy medication to patient.

The facility serves 130,000 Veterans living in 15 counties in south-central Wisconsin and in five counties in northwestern Illinois. The Madison VAMC is also the specialty care referral center for an additional 57,000 Veterans who reside in the Tomah VAMC primary service area, is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and is physically connected to the University of Wisconsin Clinical Science Center which includes the UW Hospitals and Clinics, and supports a Vet Center in Madison.
