The Primary Purpose of the Position is: The occupational therapist (OT) at the full performance level may be assigned to all program areas within VHA and provide professional, independent occupational therapy services to those patients consulted through a healthcare provider and/or self-referrals. In this position the OT demonstrates skills and knowledge in techniques for applying care targeting Mental Health disorders in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs patient evaluations:
- Veterans are scheduled for evaluation considering caseload and acuity. Coordinates veteran schedule with other interdisciplinary team members.
- Veterans medical records are reviewed, the OT recognizes the appropriateness of treatment based on indications, precautions and contraindications (e.g.
- Recognizes when to refer conditions outside the scope of therapy practice to the appropriate provider.
- Evaluations reflect the complexity through Occupational profile and client history; Assessments of occupational performance; Clinical decision-making and development of a patient centered plan of care. This may include but is not limited to: establishment of rehabilitation diagnosis and prognosis, function, motor and sensory skills, psychosocial needs, activities of daily living, durable medical equipment, adaptive equipment, safety and prevention. Barriers to learning are identified and strategies to overcome them are developed and implemented in the plan of care.
Treatment Implementation:
- Applies treatment programs and maintains clinics based on best practices and evidence based exercise prescription for patient management.
- Executes, in consultation with senior therapist, veteran care responsibilities based upon veteran needs and competencies to supportive personnel.
- Implements general and innovative therapeutic techniques not limited to: Therapeutic media, lifestyle coping skills and modifications, complementary and alternative modalities (CAM), cognitive therapy, ADL, IADLs, pain management, exercises, neuromuscular re-education, energy conservation, sensory/perception deficits, prosthetics/orthotics training, wheelchair assessments, patient/family education and mobility training to maintain or achieve veteran's physical and/or emotional rehabilitation potential. Complex therapeutic programs are conducted in consultation with senior therapist(s).
- Provides the equipment, materials, instruction, encouragement, or counseling necessary to promote a functional ADL's. Assesses, selects, adapts, and/or fits assistive and adaptive devices in accordance with rehabilitation goals.
Administrative Functions include:
- Understand and adheres to department, program, and facility procedures.
- Receive and triage patient referrals/consults, patient self-referrals, adheres to consult compliance established guidelines and is knowledgeable of admission criteria for each program (inpatient/outpatient) for appropriate continuum of care placement.
- Schedules Veterans for treatment, considering priority and frequency of care and coordinating schedules with other members of the treatment team. Flexibility of schedule must be maintained to allow for unscheduled patients and for family conferences. Assists with coverage to other PM&R clinics as needed.
- Provides relief coverage, as needed, in any PM&R program in the event of shortage of staff to maintain the continuum of patient care.
Education and Research duties:
- Identifies learning activities for self. Participates towards the advancement of knowledge and techniques related to occupational therapy via in-services or mentorship.
- Fulfills continuing education performance measure and complies with mandatory training as required by VANTHCS and AOTA.
- Keeps up with current trends in rehabilitation and evidence-based medicine/rehabilitation practices through literature review, clinical practice, and attendance to continuing education and in-services.
- Demonstrates occupational therapy competencies at the entry level.
