As a GS-0403-14 Microbiologist, your duties may include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

In order to qualify for a Microbiologist, GS-403-14 position, you must meet the following requirements:
A. Have successfully completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that includes at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms and at least 20 semester hours need to be in the physical and mathematical sciences (combination of course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent);
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Serving as a primary investigator or project member for research projects of broad and complex scope to address problems that are exceptionally difficult to resolve as part of critical clinical investigations; managing and/or collaborating on human subjects studies, advising clinicians and physician scientists on the significance of the diagnostic test menu and interpretation of laboratory test results; designing, validating, implementing and overseeing new clinical diagnostic testing services in accordance with regulatory guidelines and standards; participating in clinical investigations and trials for the management of patients; and presenting and publishing scientific studies and research results.

Have certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology/American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology
OR
Be elected to a Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.

The Clinical Center's Microbiology Service provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and consultation services, supports the clinical research programs, and conducts research in the field of microbiology. The Service consists of six sections: Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology and Mycology, Specimen Processing, Molecular Diagnostics, Genomics, and Parasitology. The laboratory has increasingly focused on molecular and Next Generation Sequencing technologies and has been a pioneer in the development of innovative infectious disease diagnostics. In addition, the laboratory has an American Society for Microbiology CPEP-approved program in Medical and Public Health Laboratory Microbiology.
