Mendenhall Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - Research Opportunity #23-26. Developing empirical constraints on the petrologic behavior of volcanic volatiles at high-threat Alaskan volcanoes
Introduction
The work will document the pre-eruptive magmatic volatile contents of historically active Cook Inlet volcanoes including Mount Spurr, Redoubt Volcano, Iliamna Volcano, and Augustine Volcano. The results will be compared to a multi-decade program of volcanic emission and eruption data from these high-threat and frequently active volcanoes.
Research Opportunity Description
For over 30 years, the USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory has sustained an airborne volcanic gas monitoring program to help track activity at hazardous volcanoes in the Cook Inlet region of Alaska. The resulting gas emissions dataset is unprecedented in scope and duration worldwide; included are measurements of sulfur-containing gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), and halogen species during major eruptions of Redoubt Volcano (1989, 2009), Mount Spurr (vent at Crater Peak, 1992), Augustine Volcano (2006), two intrusions at Iliamna Volcano (1996, 2012), and annual measurements during quiet periods. These efforts in Alaska have led to novel insights that have been broadly applied to explosive arc volcanoes globally, including the strong influence gas-water-rock 'scrubbing' reactions (Doukas and Gerlach, 1995), and the first observation of a CO2-rich eruption precursor at an intermediate-composition arc volcano (Werner et al. 2013). What remains, however, is a way to link volcanic gas-based monitoring data to magmatic processes at depth.
The successful candidate will document the pre-eruptive magmatic volatile contents of historically active Cook Inlet volcanoes including Mount Spurr, Redoubt Volcano, Iliamna Volcano, and Augustine Volcano. We expect this research to focus on preparation and analysis of melt inclusions especially from historical eruption samples and augmenting existing melt inclusion studies. The project should focus on melt inclusions hosted within dominant mineral phases from these systems and provide innovative advancements to make their preparation and analysis more efficient. Other petrologic means of estimating magmatic volatile contents, including but not limited to mineral hygrometers and numerical modeling are also encouraged.

Areas of Ph.D: Geology or related fields (candidates holding a Ph.D. in other disciplines, but with extensive knowledge and skills relevant to the Research Opportunity may be considered).

(This type of research is performed by those who have backgrounds for the occupations stated above. However, other titles may be applicable depending on the applicant's background, education, and research proposal. The final classification of the position will be made by the Human Resources Specialist.)
Physical/Environmental Demands:
Most work will be performed in an office setting. The work area normally involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices or meeting and training rooms. Work also involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as those due to irritating chemicals, noxious fumes, and flammable liquids in a laboratory setting. The position does not require risk or exposure due to environmental field conditions, however, the applicant may choose to participate in field projects where higher level risk and exposures can be encountered.

General Information
The Mendenhall Research Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for postdoctoral fellows to conduct concentrated research in association with USGS scientists, often as a final element to their formal career preparation. The Program also provides: 1) research experiences that enhance the scientific stature and credentials of the Fellows; and 2) scientific expertise to assist in the implementation of the USGS Strategic Plan and the science strategy of its programs. Mendenhall Fellows are expected to publish their results in peer-reviewed scientific outlets.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be considered for these opportunities, candidates must:
(1) have successfully completed a Ph.D. in a field related to the described Research Opportunity no earlier than September 20, 2019 (5 years before the announcement opening date); OR
(2) if close to completion, have all Ph.D. requirements completed and must submit proof of completion prior to receiving an official start date;
(3) meet the qualification requirements described in the Research Opportunity. The research proposal submitted must demonstrate that the applicant is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties for the specific Research Opportunity.
Start Date and Completion of PhD:
It is anticipated that this position will start no later than March 2026. The person selected must have all PhD requirements completed and MUST submit proof of completion prior to receiving an official start date. Exceptions may be made for a later start date on a case-by-case basis.
