This position will serve as a work lead to support the education program at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore by facilitating hands-on, curriculum-based classroom programs and field trips in the park and at partner agencies, and virtual/distance learning. Field trips and classroom programs occur throughout all seasons of the school year for grades K-12 that directly support the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and Every Kid Outdoor Initiative. Must be able to carry up to 25 lbs., shovel snow, and work outdoors for long periods of time standing, snowshoeing and/or instructing students in various terrain and conditions including snow- and ice-covered uneven surfaces and steep trails and deep snow. Duties take place primarily in winter (Dec-April) with lots of snow and temperatures below freezing and down to 0 degrees. Driving conditions for on and off-site programing require frequent winter travel to schools, partner sites, and libraries on snow-packed roads and parking areas. Spring programs take place along sandy or rocky shorelines and slushy, muddy and steep trails. Spring thaw and rain means slush, mud, higher humidity and brings out the biting insects. Helps train seasonal staff, volunteers, interns, and partners to teach established curricula and other standard programs under the direction of the Education Specialist. Assist supervisory staff in scheduling, coaching, and mentoring of program staff. Daily upkeep and maintenance of the Education Shelter is conducted before and after programs which includes but is not limited to cleaning facility and restrooms, repetitive snow removal, organization of program materials, and conducting safety checks. Other program duties could include assisting with creation of interdisciplinary Great Lakes curriculum correlated to Common Core Standards for K-12, planning and designing curriculum-based media materials and publications for schools and partners, presenting pre-school/early childhood programs, assisting with inventorying and organizing education resources, providing support with teacher trainings, grant writing and program evaluation, and assisting in the park's visitor centers as needed.
