The TERM position will be funded with project funds for the life of major infrastructure projects in Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA), including the Trans Canyon Water Line Project (TCWL), the North Rim Infrastructure Project, the South Rim Wastewater Treatment Plant, and others. Work under these projects during preparation, compliance, construction, and post-construction monitoring will including inventory, monitoring, and protection of sensitive paleontological resources, evaluation of borehole data, evaluation, and interpretation of extensive amounts of geophysical and LiDAR data, and the identification and evaluation and potential mitigation of geohazards (e.g., rockfalls, debris flows). Threats and vulnerabilities to resources, infrastructure, personnel, and visitors will be identified and evaluated. Critical geological, geophysical, and paleontological data and reports will be provided during planning, compliance, and construction phases for these infrastructure projects. GRCA requires this position to lead these efforts, plan studies, lead and assist field crews, conduct field studies, and collect geological data to ensure that collected data will inform TCWL and other major infrastructure projects planning and construction.
Major Duties:
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
Salary Range: A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
Additional Selections: This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.
Physical Demands: Field work is an integral part of this position, and may require strenuous physical activity, such as long periods of standing, walking long distances over rough, mountainous terrain, camping overnight in remote locations, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing.
Working Conditions: Data management, computer work, documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time in an office setting. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, including hot, dry, wet, cold, wind, and precipitation. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous area including steep slopes, rocky terrain, caves, deserts, and forests and/or in construction zones. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
Flagstaff Area Information: This position is stationed at the Grand Canyon National Park offices in Flagstaff, Arizona. Flagstaff is located about 70 miles from the park and has a population of about 75,000. Flagstaff has an elevation of 7,000 ft. and includes multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, a diverse community, medical and other support services. The rental and home markets in Flagstaff can be relatively expensive and limited. Summers in Flagstaff are warm with temperatures in the 80's and frequent monsoon thunderstorms. Winters are cold, with low temperatures near zero and snow averaging around 90 inches. Recreational opportunities in both areas cross all four seasons in environments ranging from low deserts to high mountains and include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities. Government housing is not available.
