Organizes work of Ranger Program, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.
Provides the park Law Enforcement program oversight and provides technical advice to the Chief Park Ranger, Supervisory Rangers, and field staff. Incumbent is relied upon as an authority and leader within the organization regarding plans, direction, and coordination of Law Enforcement activities.
Provides Emergency Services program oversight and ensures implementation of programs in Search and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, and Structural Fire, or a combination there-of.
Establishes and maintains working relationships with personnel of other Federal and non-Federal law enforcement and emergency services agencies.
Physical Demands: The incumbent may be required to perform physically rigorous assignments. The work may require physical exertion, such as regular and recurring long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces; mountainous terrain; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activity; carrying of equipment weighing 50 pounds or less; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as fire packs, saddles and rope bags. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity. Mandatory physical fitness and medical standards apply to the incumbent of this position. Physical fitness requirements in order to maintain a law enforcement commission must be met prior to and on a continuing basis during employment.
Working Conditions: The work environment is primarily sedentary in an office setting. Fieldwork may involve periodic exposure to moderate risks or discomforts such as low temperatures, high winds, adverse weather conditions, falling limbs or trees; and similar situations. Employees may require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts or machines, with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, blood borne pathogens, etc. Incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, gloves, helmets, or shields.
Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess a valid Type I National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from an accredited institution, which currently consists of over 650 class hours and lasts on average 17 weeks. Please visit the Association of National Park Rangers' Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) for additional information on approved training courses and equivalency for commissioning.
