Help
  • Duties listed are at the full performance level GS-12.
  • Maintain awareness in computer science, mathematical modeling and simulation, database management techniques, and data standards that are government wide.
  • Perform analyses and investigations using mathematical and statistical sciences.
  • Determine the nature of test parameters to be measured and plans the approaches to be used to evaluate a software system.
  • Generate design specifications and test plans directed toward improving forest modeling and simulation or related systems.
  • Provide technical advice to management.
  • Prepare and implement new procedures, criteria, and specifications for systems development.
  • Provide technical guidance/support on forest modeling and simulation systems issues.
  • Ensure systems are in compliance with department specifications/regulations.
  • Conduct research, acquisition, and testing of computer-based forest modeling and simulation tools.
  • Provide advice and guidance/insight into potential interrelationship problems between new and existing systems.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

GS-1550 Series:
Bachelors degree in computer science
OR
Bachelors degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Evaluation of Education: Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement GS-11:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level. To qualify at this level, your specialized experience must reflect all of the following:
--Computer programming for different operating systems Linux and Microsoft Windows using languages such as C++, Java, Python, and Visual Basic, and producing shared libraries and Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs);
--Leading the implementation of integrated databases;
--Developing, documenting, and maintaining a library of source code.
--Providing technical guidance/support on forest modeling and simulation systems issues.
--OR--
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in computer science;
--OR--
a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).

Specialized Experience Requirement GS-12:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level. To qualify at this level, your specialized experience must reflect all of the following:
Specialized experience at this level includes all of the following:
--Computer programming for different operating systems such as Microsoft Windows using languages such as C++, Java, Python, and Visual Basic, and producing shared libraries and Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs);
--Leading the implementation of integrated databases;
--Developing, documenting, and maintaining a library of source code for forest or natural resource models;
--Providing guidance and insight into potential interrelationship problems between new and existing systems dealing with forest and related renewable resources.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Position(s) will be located at Forest Office within thePacific Northwest Research Station. Final determination of the duty station will be made by the selecting official at the time of the job offer. Pay rates vary depending on location, the salary shown is for the Rest of the U.S. See OPM.gov for additional information on pay rates.

This position will need to be located within the commuting distance of 49 miles from a Pacific Northwest Research Station office.

This is not a remote position.
