Duties

Help

As a Biological Science Technician your duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in planning the logistics of censuses and surveys such as establishing schedules and procedures to accomplish surveys.
  • Independently carry out fish and/or wildlife studies by following research methods and established procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work.
  • Monitors and implements activities related to conservation, management, or control of fish and/or wildlife.
  • Captures, applies visual and radio tags, and gathers physiological and spatial data on fish and/or wildlife.
  • Uses and maintains specialized equipment to collect biological and physical environment data from field and/or facility investigations and reports findings to determine actual and potential impact on fish, wildlife, or plant resources from development projects, restoration projects or habitat improvement projects.
  • Collects biological samples ensuring correct documentation, reporting, storage, transport and delivery of samples taken.
  • Develops and uses automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of fish, wildlife, and/or botany reports.
  • Determines approach and then summarizes data using a variety of database software programs or other presentation approaches, ensuring records are detailed, precise and accurately transferred (e.g., terrestrial, geologic, geographic, hydrologic, ecologic, and environmental data).
  • Enters and retrieves data from geographic information systems (GIS) and/or other information management systems.
  • Assists biologists in studying and preparing reports on effects to ecosystems from development proposals of local, state, and Federal government organizations.
  • Prepares segments of recurring reports such as monthly activities and progress reports on individual projects.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 05/18/2022 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification.

Minimum Qualification [GS-6]: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrated specialized experience in the following: Collecting biological samples from fish; taking measurements and assessing readings of fish; executing tests on fish; documenting observations of fish and relating the significance of the results to the project/program; collecting, storing, organizing, and transferring raw data sheets related to fish and/or wildlife to digital files; inputting data into computer databases; and performing Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) on all data entered.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
