Summary

Seeking law students to work with CFPB attorneys and other staff covering a broad range of legal work. An excellent opportunity for law students to learn about substantive consumer-protection laws, the enforcement of these laws, and the general administrative laws of a federal agency.

This is an excepted service appointment in the CFPB Pathways Intern Program. The appointment will be 12 weeks and WILL NOT be eligible for conversion to a permanent position and WILL NOT be extended past 12 weeks.

As a Student Trainee (Legal Intern), you will:

  • Conduct legal research and analysis on relevant legal and policy issues, including those of administrative law and procedure, consumer financial law, and financial regulation.
  • Draft legal memoranda and other documents. Such other legal documents may include those needed for specific legal actions, including motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas.
  • Assist attorneys in other substantive tasks such as case preparation, assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other documents, and assisting with legal issues arising through supervisory activities.
Interns will be assigned to work in the Office of Supervision Policy within the Bureau's Washington, DC Headquarter location. To learn more about the work that interns may perform please see office description below.

CFPB is seeking law students for the following office:
  • Office of Supervision Policy: As a part of the Supervision, Enforcement, & Fair Lending Division, Supervision Policy is responsible for developing supervision strategy and providing subject-matter expertise to supervisory examination staff in connection with the various consumer financial product and service lines and compliance areas, including fair lending. A supervisory examination is an inspection of an institution's activities, management, and internal controls. Bureau exam teams collect, request, and review information from the entity, including conducting interviews. Interns can expect assignments such as: drafting legal memos analyzing legal issues that arise in the supervision program, including supervisory authorities issues and whether citations of Federal consumer financial law are appropriate in examinations; updating examination procedures and training materials used by examiners; and reviewing examination reports, supervisory letters, and other Supervision Policy documents. Interns are also invited to join calls with examiners, Supervision Policy subject matter team meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings, and meetings with other regulators.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the announcement's closing date.

Specialized Experience for the CN-30 level: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the CN-22 level (equivalent to the GS-4 level) in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. For this position, specialized experience is defined as: experience that demonstrates knowledge of analytical methods and techniques. Experience should include working in a support capacity for legal professionals such as in a law firm, legal division, or other similar department with a focus on legal matters.

OR
Education: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

Second year law school students are preferred however, first year law students should consider our general internship (in accordance with ABA - NALP Section D "Principles and Standards for Law Placement and Recruitment Activities").

You MUST meet the definition of a STUDENT for the duration of your appointment.

The definition of a student is: an individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. Students need not be enrolled in the summer as long as they are enrolled in both the preceding spring semester and subsequent fall semester. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic/vocational or technical course load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this Program.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.

  • The selectee's directly related experience at the same level as the position
  • The selectee's overall experience in a particular industry or area
  • The salaries of other Bureau employees in similar positions and with similar levels of experience.

We also take the selectee's skill set into account. Applicants should note that salary offers seldom fall near the upper end of the salary range as listed in this vacancy announcement. Salary may be set from the minimum of the salary range to the midpoint of the salary range. In some instances, based on a selectee's extensive experience directly related to the position, salary may be set at or above the mid-point up to the maximum salary for that band level.
