More information on Red Bluff: The Red Bluff Fish and Wildlife Office has a staff of about 50, most of whom are biologists and biological technicians monitoring anadromous fish populations and implementing and evaluating restoration projects, water operations, and hatchery programs in the Northern Central Valley of CA. Monitoring information is used to guide habitat restoration and evaluate two national fish hatcheries. The northern Central Valley is an excellent area to work with anadromous fish, with 4 native runs of Chinook salmon, steelhead, lamprey, and sturgeon. Some of these populations are federally or State listed as Endangered or Threatened and some populations are economically important to inland and coastal fisheries.
Red Bluff is a small rural town on the Sacramento River in the northern Central Valley of California, with the larger cities of Redding and Chico (home to California State University, Chico) about 30-40 minutes nearby. Chico is a college town with one of the largest municipal parks in the country and a destination for mountain bikers, and Redding has river-based tourist attractions at the Turtle Bay Museum and Arboretum.
Numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation are available nearby, including the Lassen Volcanic National Park, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, Mt. Shasta, and lakes Shasta and Oroville. A 3-4 hour drive can take you to skiing near Lake Tahoe, seeing a Shakespearian play in Ashland Oregon, to the north coast for fresh seafood and ocean fishing, or to San Francisco to see a touring Broadway play.
