As a Supervisory Research Ecologist (Rangelands) within the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work will require standing or sitting in place for extended periods of time and requires substantial time working with computers. Some lifting of equipment, supplies, or samples will occasionally be required. Field sampling in remote locations and conditions will be required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties of this position require sitting for extended periods of time at a computer terminal and fieldwork in outdoor environments will be required.
Key Requirements:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.
Ph.D Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic education requirements described above, in order to receive consideration for this position, you must also possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in basic and applied biological science or a closely related field of study appropriate for this position.
GS-12:
A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study appropriate for this position is qualifying at the GS-12 level.
**OR Possess one year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled.
Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) design, development and conduct of protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data; 2) conduct of sampling, experimental design, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to restoration ecology; 3) independent planning and conduct of comprehensive biological studies/investigations and requests for proposals; 4) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on biological issues; 6) design and management of projects, studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental perturbations in study areas; 7) production of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
To verify the Ph.D requirement, transcripts or verification from the university registrar must be submitted that state that clearly state: Ph.D awarded, major, and date of conferral; Failure to provide this information will result in your application receiving no further consideration.GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.
Examples of specialized experience include: (1) conducting research in rangelands and other grazed ecosystems to address species-specific management needs and associated ecological interactions; (2) applying research to management dilemmas focused on interactions with rangeland grazing, restoration, wildlife influence plant and soil ecosystem process; (3) using advanced quantitative procedures to enhance research findings and application to conservation; and (4) communicating complex biological and ecological science to agency biologists, graduate students, and the public.

3. Experience and demonstrated ability to understand and implement appropriate applications of current statistical modeling techniques for predictions across space and time.
4. Ability to successfully obtain funding from internal or external competitive sources to support ecological research program(s).
5. Ability to project budget and employment needs and to manage and supervise budgets and employees related to research projects.
