DRL is seeking Program Director(s) with expertise in Media in Informal Settings.
The Program Director(s) selected for this position will work primarily in the Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program. AISL supports innovative research, evaluation, and practice across the full domain of informal learning settings and across the human lifespan. This includes the development of theory, methods, measurement, innovation, and capacity building in informal STEM learning environments. A major goal of the program is to enhance the science and practice of broadening participation in STEM in informal learning environments.
NSF Program Directors have an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to ensure NSF funded activities are at the forefront of advancing fundamental knowledge. In support of that, Program Directors are responsible for extensive interaction with informal and formal educational organizations, academic and industry research communities, as well as interaction with other Federal agencies that may lead to development of interagency collaborations. Within this context, Program Directors solicit, receive, and review proposals; make funding recommendations; administer awards; and undertake interaction with research and learning communities across many sectors and subsectors. They are also responsible for service to the Foundation-wide activities and initiatives that together accomplish NSF’s strategic goals to:
1) Expand knowledge in science, engineering, and learning.
2) Advance the capability of the Nation to meet current and future challenges.
3) Enhance NSF’s performance of its mission.
The position requires a commitment to high intellectual and ethical standards, a considerable breath of interest, receptivity to new ideas, an understanding of and commitment to broadening participation, and a strong sense of fairness, good judgement, and a high degree of personal integrity.
It is NSF policy that NSF personnel employed at or IPAs detailed to NSF are not permitted to participate in foreign government talent recruitment programs (Foreign Talent Definitions). Failure to comply with this NSF policy could result in disciplinary action up to and including removal from Federal Service or termination of an IPA assignment and referral to the Office of Inspector General.
As required by Executive Order 14043, Federal employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee’s duty location or work arrangement, subject to such exceptions as required by law. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Related Fields, plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position; OR a Master’s degree in Related Fields, plus after award of the degree, eight or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.
Related fields include Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics Education, STEM Media Arts, Science Communication, Science Journalism, education research, the learning sciences, or a STEM-related field, or fields associated with public engagement with STEM.
A successful candidate will have experience in research, development, production, or distribution of a range of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) education media and will be knowledgeable about trends and emerging media technologies. This includes but is not limited to expertise in one or more of the following areas: education media (broadcast TV/film/radio/web-based); transmedia production; interactive media; and assessment of STEM learning via media products. The ability to mentor or support researchers and developers in STEM education media and to evaluate proposals and work products are essential. Ideal candidates will have expertise in a STEM discipline or STEM learning. Expertise in collaborating with educational researchers using quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to improve science media products is highly desired.
This position is outside the competitive civil service.
