The Northern District of Alabama is currently seeking one attorney for a permanent Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in our Civil Division, Affirmative Civil Enforcement Unit, located in the main office in Birmingham, Alabama. This unit affirmatively handles civil investigations and actions to recover damages for healthcare fraud, procurement fraud, and other offenses against the United States and its agencies, and imposes civil penalties for violations of the nation's health, safety and economic welfare laws under the False Claims Act. Typical civil fraud cases involve claims for payment submitted to government agencies (such as Medicare), on government contracts, and for certain federal benefits. The employees in this unit work closely with Criminal Division AUSAs and other federal, state, and local agencies.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $55,756 to $145,836 plus locality pay of 16.26%.
