1. Coordinates and promotes information literacy instruction, specializing in the humanities, in partnership with the faculty and other Academy teaching elements such as the Academic Success Center. Teaches students necessary course-related research skills, preparing course materials according to published course descriptions and delivering well-organized instruction to facilitate student learning.
2. Partners with faculty to align the latest pedagogical approaches to teaching and assessing scholarly communication to support the curriculum, and in support of research and publishing. Plans, organizes, and conducts course assessments at the request of individual course directors for integration of US Air Force Academy Outcome proficiencies related to scholarly communication (e.g., Clear Communication).
3. Performs project management responsibilities and advocacy associated with the McDermott Library's institutional repository program, and maintains an understanding of the current scholarly ecosystem, especially regarding copyright, open access, authors' rights, and Federal public access requirements.
4.Provides leadership for and participates in planning efforts across the McDermott Library's evidence-based assessment program for scholarly communication.
5. Initiates, designs, and oversees library service assessments that provide the Associate Director of Public Services with the information needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the current instructional program for scholarly communications. Recommends improvements and new initiatives as appropriate.
6. Works as a member of the Public Services staff to provide excellent service to all library patrons through direct research support, reference-by appointment, outreach, and asynchronous instruction (e.g., online guides, video tutorials, how-to-documents, etc.)
7. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Public Services, provides consultation and resource support to research initiatives both in scholarly communication instruction and library assessment more broadly.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Master's degree (must be completed by employment application deadline) in Library Science, Master of Library Information Science or equivalent from an American Library Association accredited institution; a minimum of 3-5 years experience in an academic library with demonstrated experience in scholarly communications, research/reference services, and teaching information literacy.

Library and Information Science. n.b., Under current academic promotion guidelines, a person selected for this position who does not possess a terminal (doctoral) degree will not be eligible for promotion to Assistant Professor and higher until a terminal degree is obtained.

A second subject master's degree in a humanities discipline.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the role of scholarly communications within higher education, and a high level of comfort managing institutional repository software. The candidate will have demonstrated experience in translating institutional goals related to scholarly communications into actionable outcomes to improve library instruction.
As the library liaison for the humanities, the candidate will have proven experience in teaching information literacy classes in the humanities using appropriate assessment tools to evaluate impact of information literacy instruction aligned with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. In addition to information literacy instruction, the candidate will have familiarity with creating and maintaining subject guides, course-specific libguides, and video tutorials.
The candidate will serve as a key figure in developing and maintaining the McDermott Library's institutional repository initiative. This will require knowledge of copyright, open access, author agreements, in addition to familiarity with repository best practices to allow digital resources to be found and utilized more broadly by the scholarly community, thus helping to raise the profile of the McDermott Library and US Air Force Academy within the realm of higher education.
The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills to work effectively with both faculty and cadets, be a self-starter, have the ability to multi-task and prioritize competing interests, a proven background in information literacy instruction at an undergraduate-focused institution, and experience in both qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g. focus groups, interviews, surveys, numerical data) of assessing services and collections in assigned areas as they relate to undergraduate education.
The successful candidate is expected to show previous contributions to the library profession through regional, national, or international forums via applicable committee work; presentations suitable for publication; or publications of research findings appropriate for academic libraries. The successful candidate will maintain current knowledge of trends and changes in the library profession, especially in public service domains such as scholarly communication and information literacy instruction.

The successful candidate will serve the McDermott Library and the Academy by being a member on or leading committees and task forces and represent the instructional program as appropriate; e.g., coordinating initiatives with the various institutional Outcomes teams that depend on clear communication and information literacy proficiencies. The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Dean of Faculty, anticipates filling the TERM (full-time) position of Instructor of Library Scholarly Communications and Research beginning on 30 AUG 21 and terminating on 30 JUN 2024. Subsequent re-appointments will be considered based upon an assessment of performance, departmental needs, and funding availability.
The USAF Academy does not offer tenure. Initial faculty appointments are for 3 years. At the end of the second year, the original appointment may be extended for an additional 3 years with the possibility of successive extensions. This system provides long-term employment stability for reappointment-eligible faculty with extensions occurring with at least 3 years remaining on a current appointment. Extensions are based on an assessment of performance and departmental needs, and financial constraints. Historically, 95% of eligible faculty are extended, and the average length of time on faculty for those currently serving in this system exceeds 12 years.
