This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), National Germplasm Resources Laboratory, in Beltsville, MD.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.

For positions dealing with the study of fungi, or with basic mycological relationships, the course work in botany must have included at least 6 semester hours in mycology.
Evaluation of Education: Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying. The courses required for mycologists are specific and must have been in mycology.

For this position, specialized experience is experience: Collecting plant germplasm in a field environment; develop reports on plant genetic resources; and working with internal and external stakeholders related to plant germplasm research.
At The GS-13:
Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience: Leading and developing projects to collect plant germplasm in a field environment; publishing research findings on plant genetic resources or plant germplasm; working with internal and external stakeholders related to plant germplasm research; and presenting research findings.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Demands:The work is a combination of sedentary office work and physically demanding field work. In the office, some degree of manual dexterity needed for routine keyboard entry and updating of data, and periods of light physical exertion such as standing and carrying heavy books are required. Field work is required and often extremely rigorous for plant explorations in the U.S. or other countries, or to evaluate sites for in situ conservation. The work requires travel to remote locations (both U.S. or foreign countries), long hikes in inclement weather over rough terrain, and exposure to parasites and pathogens.
Work Environment:The work is performed mostly in an office environment, but up to several weeks a year may be spent working on field projects outdoors in the U.S. and/ or foreign countries.

The incumbent will use scientific methods to establish priorities and opportunities for PGR conservation, enacting cooperative agreements or other appropriate funding mechanisms between the ARS and collaborators to support approved projects, and advising participants and collaborators on technical matters related to germplasm collection and exchange.
