Duties

Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Admit and manage inpatients with general adult medical illnesses. This includes: Performing histories and physical examinations, rounding on patients, writing progress notes, discharge planning and timely completion of discharge summaries.
  • Work closely with specialists and primary care physicians to ensure that inpatients receive continuous high-quality care.
  • Provision of 24/7 consultative support to inpatients admitted to surgical service.
  • Provide triage services for coordination of admission of patients currently in an ambulatory setting including the emergency room and/or clinic.
  • Discuss all medical admissions with emergency room, ICU and clinic physicians to ensure clinical appropriateness of admission to general medical floors.
  • Discuss with external attending providers, the possible transfer of appropriate veterans from outlying hospitals/Emergency Departments.
  • Demonstrate interest in engaging in ongoing process improvement with respect to measures of quality care, patient safety, patient satisfaction, patient and family education, utilization management, cost control.
  • Take an active role in optimizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the inpatient care process from admission through discharge.
  • Perform inter-professional rounds on assigned medical wards, managing and participating in the patients' care.
  • Perform appropriate clinical and administrative functions as assigned.
  • Participate in quality management/assurance and chart review activities.
  • Participate in, and at times lead, clinical and education administrative committees, task groups, or special projects.
  • Serve on Medical Staff committees.
  • Experience with routine hospitalist procedures and airway management preferred but not required
Work Schedule: 7 days on followed by 7 days off; 12 hour shifts; primarily day hour 7:00am to 7:00pm.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Two years of hospital experience preferred, but recent residency grads will be considered.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre-employment physical. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
