The senior project archeologist provides archeological data for management decisions requiring archeological input such as: determination of the location, extent and significance of resources; identifying and addressing regulatory compliance needs for treatment of archeological sites; preparation and completion of archeological inventory, monitoring, and excavation reports; and working with project teams to develop archeological treatment plans.

Responsible for, or make significant contributions, to specific plans, action plans, revisions, and fiscal and budget documents. Identify, evaluate, and monitor archeological resources.
Design, implement, and supervise multiple-phased, and multiple-site archeological projects involving documentary, archival, and collections research; field investigations (both survey and excavation); laboratory analysis of recovered data; and professional report writing.
Coordinate research and review documents.
Serve as the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative for projects conducted through contracts, interagency agreements, and cooperative agreements.
Incorporate appropriate GIS and other technology and analysis into job to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquiries from managers and others.
Recommend, plan for, and execute archeological investigations required to meet National Historic Preservation Act, Archeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, National Park Service guidelines, and the research needs of the park.
Identify fund sources and develop funding proposals to address archeological research needs.

May supervise staff up to 20% of the time

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/07/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT: You must possess one of the following basic requirements (in addition to the specialized experience requirements listed below) to qualify:

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques); 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.; AND 6 semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a related curriculum: anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies; or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in 1 above (including archeological field school).
Combination of college-level education or training that provides the knowledge equivalent to that described in above (in 1 and/or 2), plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. Please note: This combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study.
At least four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

- AND -You must possess at least one of the following specialized experience requirements by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of an Archeologist, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may include but is not limited to: work on interdisciplinary environmental planning and resources management teams, providing information on archeological resources and contributing to, or reviewing, planning, inventory, assessment, and compliance documents; design, implement, and supervise multiple-phased, and multiple-site archeological projects involving documentary, archival, and collections research; field investigations (both survey and excavation); laboratory analysis of recovered data; and professional report writing. You must include hours per week worked.
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education from an accredited college or university leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in anthropology, archeology, or related disciplines appropriate to this position. You must include transcripts.
Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. For the GS-11 level, only appropriate graduate education beyond the second year may be substituted for the required experience. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 (50 percent of the experience requirement) and 45 semester hours or 68 quarter hours of appropriate directly related graduate education (50 percent of the education requirement). The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts and hours per week worked.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible.
