The GRECCs mission is to advance knowledge of geriatrics through design and development of model clinical programs focusing on clinical care of aging veterans, disseminating new geriatric knowledge and research findings through training and education programs for health care professionals, and aging the research activities that will be used to improve the health and healthcare for older Veterans.
NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 1 year and 1 day). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition.
Duties include but may not be limited to the following:
Project Support and Coordination -50%
- Coordinates all work-related activities required to complete single-site or multi-site projects; assists the project leads with all project-related tasks.
- Manages regulatory documents and is responsible for submitting to the Institutional Review Board (IRSB) and the Research and Development (R&D) Committee all documents required for project approval; effectively utilizes IRBNet software for submissions.
- Provides ongoing monitoring of projects and adheres to all applicable deadlines for submission of regulatory reports including adverse event reporting, annual reports and other reports required to maintain compliance according to the appropriate oversight body (e.g. CAVHS, IRB/R&D committees, Office of Rural Health).
Coordination of the Work/Quality Assurance (QA) monitoring-30%
- Trains other Health Science Specialists and verifies that they understand and adhere to all aspects of the protocol and all relevant policies, can reliably and correctly perform all procedures for which they are responsible, and maintain confidentiality and protect the rights of human subjects.
- Accurately and reliability performs the duties of a Level 1 quality assurance reviewer which entails auditing research study records for the presence of documentation required to maintain compliance with R&D and IRB standards/requirements.
- Monitors and evaluates quality of all data and uses proper approach for correcting all errors identified.
Literature Searches; Compilation of Bibliographies and Educational Materials-10%
- Utilizes various library and on-line search engines to perform extensive literature searches on specific topics as required for a given research or clinical project.
Manuscript Preparation -10%
- Assists in the preparation of manuscripts authored by a project lead for publication in peer-reviewed heath/medical journals.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able and willing to work closely with frail older patients. The incumbent will encounter such patients/subjects in a nursing home care/hospital ward environment and possibly outpatient settings. The physical demands of the job will include assisting the patients/subjects in and out of beds or chairs, walking with and providing standby assistance to the patients/subjects, assisting them on and off of weight scales, bending over them in order to perform limited arthropometric measurements, and otherwise walking, standing, bending and carrying of light terns such as medical records, instructional materials, books and manuals through the hospital (e.g., from the incumbent's office to the nursing home care units) throughout his or her tour of duty. The incumbent must also be able to safely perform blooddrawing procedures (which will require coordinated use of two hands), drive an automobile, and see and hear clearly. The specialist must be able and willing to drive to interview sites as required.
Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
