The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
- Perform tasks involving the definition, design, development, enhancement, and/or maintenance of system software. The work includes defining and revising system requirements, system design, development, testing, documentation, implementation, maintenance, evaluation, and disposition.
- Conduct problem resolution during all phases of the system development lifecycle. Discuss problems with Lead IT Specialists, management, customers, and staff as appropriate. Recommend solutions to software and data problems, and ensure they are resolved in a timely and accurate manner.
- Serve as a technical point-of-contact with Fiscal Service and Fiscal Service customers. This includes participating with other support groups in areas such as incident/problem resolution, project planning and implementations, software and data design efforts, and operations and maintenance support.
- Provide technical support pertaining to software development and data services. This includes providing technical guidance, and conducting research, training, consultation and additional support to other developers, other technology support staff, and customers on subjects such as application architecture and capabilities, platform alternatives, configuration alternatives, standards and procedures, and performance management.
- Participate in the development and evaluation of the design strategy for assigned software development projects, leading to the development of programming specifications. The programming specifications include conceptual design, data design, architecture and framework design, user interface prototypes, and batch process design details.

For the GS-09, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes experience performing IT application software work which involves analyzing and refining system requirements, writing code, and testing applications.
Examples of such experience for could include any of the following:
- Experience in using software development principles, concepts, and theories of Information Technology and the standard practices to perform difficult, but well defined assignments; OR
- Experience creating system requirements and testing applications; OR
- Experience learning from senior IT specialists in defining, designing, coding, and testing enterprise systems; OR
- Experience using programming languages and frameworks such as HTML, JavaScript, or CSS.

For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service.
