Summary

This position is located at the Northern Research Station located in West Lafayette, IN.

This employee will work in the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center and will lead efforts for evaluation and selection of promising selections/cultivars and the development of procedures designed to ensure their application in the field.

Duties

Help
  • Conduct a genetic development program required to test the potential, propagating ability, and capability of new selections of a number of high value hardwood species.
  • Develop guidelines needed to achieve optimal testing efficiency by applying the principles of quantitative genetic analysis to measurements of seletions established with appropriate family structure.
  • Develop models designed to predict the outcome of genotype ? environment interactions as they affect limits to geographic transfer of selections and the design of future breeding and testing research and development.
  • Maintain sufficient knowledge of the national hardwood genetics situation to continuously provide policy level input on the context.
  • Serve as an expert within the specialized field of quantitative genetics of high value hardwood species, including the methodology applied in performing in-depth analyses of genetics data under a variety of conditions.
  • Coordinate ongoing research and field work at multiple planting sites.
  • Provide collaborators, public and private land managers, and the general public with the scientific information needed to make resource management decisions.
  • Evaluate the impacts of climate change on patterns of tree adaptation by utilizing legacy data and newly collected data from known seed sources and progeny tests.
  • Use modern statistical methods to evaluate legacy data to determine which of the available datasets contributes to an understanding of adaptive patterns.
  • Supervisory duties are performed 25% or more of the time.

Basic Requirements for Plant Pathologist (0434)

Degree: A full four year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology. Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, agronomy, forestry, horticulture, or similar subjects may be used to meet the 20-semester-hour requirement in basic botany or plant science. To meet the specific 10-semester-hour requirement in plant pathology, the courses must have been in plant pathology, or have dealt with specific subject matter areas of plant pathology such as those concerned with viruses, fungal or bacterial diseases, host-plant relationships, biotic or chemical controls, environmental or physiological diseases, parasitic diseases, etc.

Basic Requirements for Plant Physiologist (0435)

Degree: A full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in botany or plant physiology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 10 semester hours in plant physiology. The 10-semester-hour requirement in plant physiology is specific. Course work is qualifying if it dealt with plant physiology, some phase of plant physiology, or methods and techniques applied in plant physiology work. Other course work in borderline areas should be evaluated based on content.

Basic Requirements for Geneticist (0440)

Degree: A full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics. Courses dealing with genetics, some phase of genetics, or specific techniques that are applied in genetics work are acceptable. This includes courses in genetics, plant or animal genetics, molecular and cellular biology, mathematics and statistics (as they apply to genetics), population dynamics, and certain techniques such as those dealing with irradiation. Course work consisting of an appropriate combination of basic courses in genetics and cytology or statistics are also acceptable.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience in the amounts listed below.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

GS-14: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the 13 grade level in the Federal service. To qualify, your application must reflect all of the following:

  • Conducting the full cycle of scientific research in one of the following fields: tree pathology, physiology or genetics as related to tree improvement, regeneration, protection, and/or utilization, including defining scientific research problems, developing productive hypotheses, developing and applying new techniques to the solutions of problems, and interpreting and relating the significance of the results to other research findings;
  • Serving in a leadership and program management position in an academic institution, government agency, or industry, and/or national/international technical societies such as committee level chair, or co-chair, vice chair; and
  • Performing cooperative research (including mentoring) with academic, land management, or industrial partners related to conducting mixed tree species studies stands and plantings; detection, risk analyses and integrated management of tree diseases and pests; and/or developing new approaches for propagation of trees to improve post-planting survival and growth.
GS-15: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the 14 grade level in the Federal service. To qualify, your application must reflect all of the following:
  • Leading and conducting the full cycle of scientific research in one of the following fields: tree pathology, physiology or genetics as related to tree improvement, regeneration, protection, and/or utilization which included defining scientific research areas that are critical, significant, and have the highest potential for success. Guidelines were often inadequate, and the work required deviation from or extension of traditional methods and practices, or the development of essentially new or vastly modified techniques or methods. The findings of this research influenced the plans of scientists in university, land management, and/or industrial laboratories;
  • Serving in a leadership and program management position in an academic institution, government agency, or industry and/or national/international technical societies such as conference chair or co-chair or a division chair; and
  • Serving as an expert consultant and mentor on strategic research on tree pathology, physiology or genetics for academic, land management, or industrial partners evidenced through association with national professional organizations such as Walnut Council, the Fred M. van Eck Forest Foundation, etc.

Additional information

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position.
