Incumbent serves as the AIR Flight Test Program Flight Safety Officer – manages the Aircraft Certification Service (AIR) Flight Test Safety Program.
As a recognized expert he/she provides leadership, direction, and guidance to manage the AIR Safety Management System (SMS) under the minimal direction of a manager. Manages the AIR Flight Test Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) and the Web-Based Analytical Technology (WBAT) platform. Maintains flight safety program records. Serves as liaison between the AIR Flight Program Executive and FAA’s Director of Flight Program Safety (AJF-5000), FAA Senior Flight Safety Officer, respective organizational managers and individual Facility Flight Safety Officers.
He/she identifies safety concerns and notifies the appropriate managers for corrective action. Participates in development and/or review of operational audit procedures and aircraft accident/incident safety investigations. Analyzes, identifies and make recommendations regarding accidents, incidents based on risk analysis and safety trends. Conducts meetings and seminars to establish and maintain standardized policies and procedures within AIR. Disseminates flight test incident and accident information to the AIR flight test community. Serves as the AIR focal point for Crew Resource Management training. Chairs the AIR Flight Test Program Flight Safety Committee, and participates in aviation industry flight safety events.
Secondary duties include conducting engineering and flight test activities necessary to find compliance with the Federal Aviation Regulations as they pertain to type (including amended and supplemental) certification of aircraft.

This position may be virtual. This is a Testing Designated, Safety Critical Position.
BASIC QUALIFICATION: To qualify for this position you must have a degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

A combination of education and experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
There are alternate methods to meeting the engineering educational requirement (for example, holding current professional engineering registration, having passed the EIT examination, or having completed specified academic courses or a related degree). Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes: Experience providing leadership and strategic guidance on managing/conducting type certification programs that lead to FAA Part 23, and/or 25, and/or 27, and/or 29, and/or 33 type certification.
