The Dental Hygienist provide direct patient care and receive guidance from higher-level or supervisory staff members for only the most complex patients and require only general supervision from a dentist. This position will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19. It has been designated as Mission Critical and selected candidates must be able to start immediately.
Incumbents are responsible for disease and treatment management recommendations, denture care, scaling and root planning, radiographs/image interpretation, patient education (e.g. post-procedure, tobacco cessation, caries and perio-disease prevention). behavior management, management of stable medically compromised patients (including risk factors), instrument sharpening, inter-service communication.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Provide preventive dentistry measures for patient instruction and training.
Use anatomy and physiology in order to interpret the examination request accurately; and understand the functioning and interrelationship of the various organs appearing on the film and in the various stages of the examination by judging the acceptability of the radiograph for diagnostic use; and correctly mounting them for viewing.
Provide individual and group oral health care instructions to inpatients, outpatients, Nursing Home Care Unit patients, etc;
Use knowledge of VA, Joint commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and related regulations and guidelines pertaining to dental matters.
Skilled in performing specialized prophylactic and preventive dental hygiene procedures.
Has the ability to independently perform expanded dental functions under the technical guidance of a professional dentist.
Skilled in providing individual and group oral health care instructions to patients and other staff in regards to the practice of effective oral hygiene techniques; and Skilled in presenting oral hygiene lectures and demonstrations, and develop training materials.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
