The Deputy Director, Strategic Technology Protection & Exploitation (DD, STP&E) serves as the lead for the Department of Defense (DoD) in maintaining DoD technology advantage by mitigating exploitation and vulnerabilities of critical missions, programs, and technologies to determined adversaries and establishing and implementing proactive protection methodologies. The incumbent is the DoD lead for program protection, antitamper, supply chain risk management, system and software assurance, cyber resilient weapons systems policy, guidance, education and training, standards, and security engineering methods and tools.
DD, STP&E leads Technology Area Protection Planning, establishes Science and Technology (S&T) protection methods and tools for implementation across the Department of Defense (DoD), and performs technology and information loss and damage assessments which are used to inform mitigation strategies. Duties include but are not limited to:
The DD, STP&E must be a highly qualified technical expert. An undergraduate or higher degree in engineering, the physical sciences or mathematics is desirable; an advanced degree in engineering, the physical sciences or mathematics, Science and Technology Policy or technology management is highly desirable for successful performance.
Veterans preference is not applicable to the Senior Executive Service.
