This position is located in the Butte Falls Field Office, Medford District, Oregon. The incumbent provides support to the Aquatics program with major duties comprising of the following: surveying streams for type and location; laying out and mapping riparian area buffers within timber sales and other projects; collecting water quality data; assessing restoration needs, such as for decommissioning roads; working as a Contracting Officer Representative on restoration projects; and working with the project’s Inter-Disciplinary Team. Data entry, GIS, and other office-related duties are also a substantial part of the work, however this is primarily a field going position. Work is normally conducted independently or in conjunction with mentoring Aquatics program seasonal employees, or there may be be advanced technical work with Fisheries and Hydrology specialists.
Physical Demands: Work is mainly performed in the field. The incumbent may be required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, perform duties that require bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or lifting. Work may also include lifting moderately heavy items such as equipment and supplies.
Work Environment: Work is performed often outdoors in a field setting. The individual may be exposed to discomfort from extreme temperatures or inclement weather and may be subject to hostile wildlife, chemical, and physical hazards.

Basic Education Requirement: This position has a basic education requirement which requires you to have a degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels; OR a combination of education and experience that includes the coursework shown above plus appropriate experience such as field or laboratory work requiring application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics or civil engineering to make observations, take samples, operate instruments, assemble, analyze and interpret data and report findings orally and in writing.
You will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.
Specialized Experience Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic entry requirement, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education of the position. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade.
Specialized Experience for the GS-09 Hydrologist: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in hydrologic related work. Specialized experience is defined as experience which includes the application of knowledge and competence in solving theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. Examples: working with senior specialists to plan and coordinate projects involving the analysis and evaluation of flow and transport of sediment or pollutants in stream channels and ground water; assessing, monitoring, and researching existing work on the nutrients, pollutants, and other components in ground and surface water; evaluating data, identifying trends in movement of water and any known contaminants and providing feedback on anomalies to more senior specialists; and applying standard flood forecasting procedures to compensate for missing or conflicting measurements; -OR- 2 years of graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree in Hydrology or a directly related field; -OR- an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first year of may be combined with experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

(4) Ability to evaluate various hydrologic and climate data sources from stream gages, rain gages, electronic data recorders, satellite and other computer generated information, in order to complete the assigned hydrolic work.
(5) Knowledge and experience with computers and computer modeling, spreadsheets or databases, geographic information systems and maps, advanced calculators, aerial photogrammetry, and other data management software.
