Duties

Help

  • Writes and edits social media posts daily about natural history science, that are accurate, relevant, and engaging for audiences on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other priority platforms. Creates shareable visuals (e.g. photos, illustrations, infographics, videos).
  • Tracks daily metrics for our social media platforms and reports on them monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Builds an expanding network of relationships across the museum to advance the content production pipeline.
  • Monitors conversations about the museum that are unfolding on the priority platforms—responding to comments and direct messages.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as writing and producing content for multiple social media platforms for a museum, educational or cultural institution with a focus on science and/or culture; participating in the development of social media plans and strategies; and gathering information for assessing the effectiveness of social media efforts.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Ability to write, edit, and take photos daily and on deadline, in order to communicate complex scientific subjects in a succinct, accurate, and compelling way that audiences want to share on social media.
  2. Ability to organize, analyze, summarize, and share insights from data. 
  3. Ability to listen to and converse with diverse people and personalities in order to elicit ideas, information, and participation in social media content. 
  4. Ability to exercise strong editorial judgment and critical thinking while monitoring social media conversations, with an eye toward the museum’s reputation—flagging concerns as well as opportunities for greater engagement.
