The intent of this position is that of a Research Biologist, Ph.D. to support the ongoing biological research mission at the CTVHCS. The incumbent is an established scientist and a teacher in the field of biochemistry, molecular biology and/or cell biology. The incumbent researches problems of vast scope and complexity which require innovation of the investigator for solution. He/she formulates hypotheses and designs rigorous tests for filling gaps in exiting knowledge of the appropriate scientific field of expertise. Analyzes and interprets results using appropriate knowledge of experimental design and statistical methods. Reports results of research by publication in peer reviewed scientific journals and by presentation at local, regional, national and international meetings of professional and technical societies.
The incumbent directs the operations of the laboratory and support personnel to ensure that the long-term goals of the research program are met, using knowledge of the pertinent scientific discipline at the professional level. He/she is responsible for the safety, education and performance of all personnel operating within his/her laboratory with respect to all research activities.
The incumbent successfully competes for extra-mural research support, which requires recognition of the innovative nature of the investigator's hypotheses, as well as their record of significant contribution to the field of expertise. He/she will be appointed by the Facility Director to participate directly as a member of the Subcommittee for Research Safety (SRS) required to perform complex scientific reviews and provide recommendations to research protocols involving basic science submitted by other investigators for final approval with the Research Development Committee (RDC).
The incumbent teaches members of the scientific community as well as students, technical staff, and the general public about his/her area of expertise. He/she will be assigned to mentor medical students from an academic affiliate who must participate research to meet their medical student research objectives. The incumbent has a training program for junior investigators which promotes the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills required for obtaining and sharing new research findings. Other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily performed in a laboratory, requiring agility, dexterity, and exceptional hand/eye coordination. The work involves prolonged work with microscopes. Work may involve moving moderately heavy objects into place, such as containers of reagents for equipment or retrieving supplies from other locations within the facility.
