As a Public Affairs Specialist in the Office of Communications in Portland, OR, the incumbent manages key components of the communications program, develops strategies to convey the agency's message, and informs the public about the agency's programs and activities. Responsibilities include managing internal and external communications for the Office of Communications Deputy State Director; serving as the spokesperson for the agency on certain issues; providing content for the agency's social media platforms and website; and communicating issues related to the implementation of range policy, resource management plans, and the National Fire Plan.
Physical Demands: The work is generally sedentary and does not require unusual physical effort. Most of the work is performed in an office setting. Driving a car or pickup is periodically required. The work often requires walking outdoors and travel in light aircraft, helicopters, and off-road vehicles. Long work days are occasionally required to meet deadlines and resolve specific problems.
Work Environment: Most of the work is performed in an office setting although travel to field sites or other BLM/government offices is often required. Attendance at meeting at night or on weekends is sometimes required.

GS-09: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-07 -OR- master's or equivalent graduate degree -OR- 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree -OR- LL.B. or J.D., if related.

Examples of specialized experience for GS-12: Applying principles, practices and techniques of communication to include coordinating public affairs programs and dealing with the media. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
