Works as a non-partisan employee of the House, providing access and information about Congress to credentialed members of the daily press corps. This employee, depending on HS level, is responsible for delivering a variety of administrative services that facilitate media coverage of the House by the daily print and online media.

1. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of House legislative activity
2. Must be able to identify, create and accurately describe House legislative actions via Twitter, including scheduling information and parliamentary procedures in a fast-paced news environment
3. Identifies and disseminates legislative information to members of the media using distribution lists
4. Ability to recognize and keep House floor actions up to date
5. Maintains the gallery’s website with information that is relevant and reflects the current news environment
6. Establishes, develops and maintains contacts with leadership and committee staffs regarding the legislative schedule and major news events
7. Works closely with committee press staff to track hearing schedules and provide on-site support for high-profile committee hearings and related media events
8. Coordinates logistics for a variety of special events such as congressional gold medal ceremonies, Joint Meetings, Joint Sessions, and the Presidential Inauguration
9. Assists Director with planning and implementing logistics, credentialing for the national presidential nominating conventions
10. Proficient in various software, including, but not limited to Microsoft Dynamics Customer Engagement, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, all with the goal of maintaining membership database records, sending mass e-mails and producing reports
11. Creates, manages and maintains extensive legislative, historical and statistical files
12. Assists in reviewing press membership applications and maintains membership data files
13. Develops and fosters relationships with credentialed members of the media
14. Attends key news events and briefings and, where needed, uses social media to disseminate important information
15. Other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field, with a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years news media experience, and a minimum of two (2) years specific experience in journalism/ communications. Capitol Hill news media experience strongly preferred.
Proficient knowledge and understanding of legislative process
Proficient knowledge of House operations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to handle competing interests, personalities and job duties simultaneously with a high degree of professionalism
Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, which is largely driven by House floor sessions
Proficiency in Word, Excel and various database systems
Skills in web design and development using content management systems such as Drupal, proficiency in Photoshop and other digital platforms desired
Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision
Bachelor's degree
