As a Physicist (Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics) you will,
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
If you are a current federal employee, appointed under the direct-hire authority, you will be given a new appointment.
You will be required to serve a mandatory one (1) year probationary period unless you meet the exceptions in 5 CFR part 315.802.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Formulating and directing a research program in nuclear physics and its relationship to areas of related technologies including particle accelerators, nuclear physics detector instrumentation, data acquisition, and analysis computer systems; establishing research priorities and funding levels, reviewing scientific literature, and coordinating issues with the international scientific community; organizing, participating in, or leading committees for the purpose of representing an organization and; leading the development of experimental research in the field of nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics.

EDUCATION:
This position has positive education requirements and transcripts must be provided prior to on-boarding if selected.
To qualify for the 1310 Series, applicants must possess:
(A) Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
OR
(B) Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, providing more than 40 percent of total funding for this vital area of national importance. It oversees and is the principal federal funding agency of the Nation's research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences.
The Office of Science manages fundamental research programs in basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, and computational science. In addition, the Office of Science is the Federal Government's largest single funder of materials and chemical sciences, and it supports unique and vital parts of U.S. research in climate change, geophysics, genomics, life sciences, and science education. The Office of Science manages this research portfolio through six interdisciplinary program offices: Advanced Scientific Computing Research, Basic Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental Research, Fusion Energy Sciences, High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics. In addition, the Office of Science sponsors a range of science education initiatives through its Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists program.
The incumbent will serve as a recognized scientific authority and expert in nuclear physics and in the sub-field of nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics and, as such, has the responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in this field on a national and International level.
